EN | This year Cinema Colombiano invites you to travel along with us through tropical landscapes, páramos, rivers and roads. Our two-day film festival will take place both in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and is dedicated to Visiones de la Tierra. We’ll reflect on the changes to the planet and what the species living in it are going through. The program includes various films from Colombia that investigate the destruction of the planet, in connection with the historical over-exploitation of natural resources. You will see characters who wonder whether to live in the countryside or be carried away by the city. Others who carry the ancient indigenous wisdom and resist the destruction of ecosystems.

ES | Este año en Cinema Colombiano les invitamos a viajar con nosotres por paisajes tropicales, páramos, ríos y carreteras. Les llevaremos por Visiones de la Tierra para reflexionar sobre los cambios por los que atraviesa el planeta, y las especies que aquí vivimos. Presentaremos películas que indagan desde Colombia la destrucción del planeta, en conexión con la histórica sobre-explotación de recursos naturales. Verán personajes que se preguntan si vivir en el campo o dejarse llevar por la ciudad. Otros que desde la sabiduría milenaria indígena resisten contra la destrucción de los ecosistemas.

The event will take place over 2 days, each with its own unique program. Aside from the films, there will be music, with a Dooombiamberos DJ-set filled with hypnotic cumbias in Filmhuis Cavia in Amsterdam, and live gaita music from the London Gaita Social Club in WORM Rotterdam. There, we will also close down with a club night, organized in collaboration with Club WORM / Wormhole. As always delicious Colombian food will be on sale.

El evento se llevará a cabo durante 2 días, cada uno con su propio programa único. Además de las películas, habrá música, con un DJ-set de Dooombiamberos lleno de cumbias hipnóticas en Filmhuis Cavia en Amsterdam, y música gaita en vivo desde el London Gaita Social Club en WORM Rotterdam. Allí también cerraremos con una noche de club, organizada en colaboración con el Club WORM / Wormhole. Como siempre deliciosa comida colombiana estará a la venta.

PROGRAM DAY 1 - FILMHUIS CAVIA

EN | ‘Ayenan’ is the smallest particle in the universe that jumpstarts life. This film documents a counter-expedition that follows the upward movement of water throughout its natural cycle, going from the Andean-Amazon foothills to the Atlantic Ocean on the coast of Colombia. Along the way, the journey reveals the traces of a long-forgotten expedition in search of El Dorado and territorial philosophy of Indigenous groups from the region. Climbing up from a river in the lower Amazon to a lake in the upper Andes, members of Ñambi Rimai Media Collective come to a sacred landscape in order to plant water back into the mountain and return a long-lost treasure. Together they create an offering, a ritual, which embodies situated forms of biocultural peace-building between regions, cultures, and non-human worlds.

EN | In the south of Colombia, in the middle of the jungle, there is a mega concrete structure abandoned and without destination. A bridge that collides with the mountain and leads nowhere. This work symbolizes the obsession of the human being to master the impenetrable obstacles posed by nature and also the corruption that reduces this search to ashes and empty efforts. After almost a century of attempts, the dream of modern highways is blurred and the most absurd situations are erected as lost highways. Workers, engineers and tourists pass through the theater of the illusory and the diffuse; all seem stranded in time and time also allows disasters. Suspension advances along a road where the force of nature is revealed in its maximum expression, where delirious dreams and human failures create a bitter metaphor of the Colombian State.

EN | Youngsters in Juanchaco, in the Colombian Pacific coast, are tempted by the possibility of easily earning large amounts of money through fishing the white tuna. The white tuna is the name given to the cocaine bales that drug traffickers throw into the sea before being captured. Mariana, the protagonist of this story, walks in between her elders' Afrodescendent culture, and a fastly changing world.

This film will be anteceded by the presentation of the book: “Afro Colombian Narratives from the San Juan River: Women Leaders, Healing, Memory and Peace”, by Martha Luz Machado Caicedo. This work is a call to support the struggle of land defenders in the Colombian Pacific. With their deep and ancient relationship with nature, they are protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse territories. Machado is a PhD in Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam, with more than thirty years of work in the Colombian Pacific.

EN | Rosita and Joselin (1980) are two Inga siblings in the care of Doña Lola, the owner of the El Puente canteen, who exploits them for labour. Tired of the discrimination in their context and the abuses of Doña Lola and the miners that visit the canteen, they decide to run away and look for the money they need to be reunited with their mother.

EN | In the name of their lord Landero… the Dooombiamberos will deliver a DJ-set filled with cumbia, cumbia rebajada, champeta, salsa dura and anything else that's loud, dance-able and hypnotic. The earthbeat is their guide. The Dooombiamberos are Mitze Apocalipze, Chucho Vinilo and Mijo: 2/3rd Colombian, 100% cumbia fanatics!

ES | ‘Ayenan’ es la partícula más pequeña en el universo que da inicio a la existencia. Esta documental gira entorno a una contra-expedición que sigue el movimiento ascendente del agua a lo largo de su ciclo natural, desde el piedemonte Andino-Amazónico hasta el océano Atlántico en la costas Colombianas. En el trayecto, el viaje revela las huellas de una expedición ya olvidada en busca del tesoro de El Dorado, al igual que el pensamiento territorial de grupos originarios, entre ellos Inga, Kamënstá y Arhuacos. Subiendo desde el río Putumayo en la parte baja del Amazonas hasta la laguna de la Chocha en los Andes superiores, miembros del Colectivo de Medios Ñambi Rimai se encuentran con un paisaje sagrado a dónde van a plantar agua de vuelta en la montaña y así, devolver un tesoro perdido desde hace mucho tiempo. Juntos, crean una ofrenda y un ritual que encarna formas de diálogo con el territorio y la construcción de paz biocultural entre regiones, culturas y mundos no humanos.

ES | Al sur de Colombia, en medio de la selva, hay una mega estructura de concreto abandonada y sin destino. Un puente que choca con la montaña y no conduce a ninguna parte. Esta obra simboliza la obsesión del ser humano por dominar los impenetrables obstáculos supuestos por la naturaleza y también la corrupción que reduce dicha búsqueda a cenizas y esfuerzos vacíos. Tras casi un siglo de intentos, el sueño de carreteras modernas se desdibuja y las situaciones más absurdas se erigen en autopistas pérdidas. Obreros, ingenieros y turistas transitan por el teatro de lo ilusorio y lo difuso; todos parecen varados en el tiempo y el tiempo también permite los desastres. Suspensión avanza por un camino donde la fuerza de la naturaleza se revela en su máxima expresión, donde los sueños delirantes y fracasos humanos crean una metáfora amarga del Estado colombiano.

ES | Los jóvenes de Juanchaco, en la costa pacífica colombiana, se ven tentados por la posibilidad de ganar fácilmente grandes cantidades de dinero con la pesca del atún blanco. El atún blanco es el nombre que reciben las pacas de cocaína que los narcotraficantes arrojan al mar antes de ser capturados. Mariana, la protagonista de esta historia, camina entre la cultura afrodescendientes de la costa del Pacífico y un mundo que cambia rápidamente.

Esta película estará precedida por la presentación del libro: Relatos Afrosanjuaneños. Mujeres líderes, sanación memoria y paz, de Martha Luz Machado Caicedo. Esta obra es un llamado a apoyar la lucha de las defensoras de la tierra en el Pacífico colombiano. Con su profunda y ancestral relación con la naturaleza, protegen uno de los territorios más biodiversos del mundo. Machado es Doctora en Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Amsterdam, con más de treinta años de trabajo en el Pacífico colombiano.

ES | Rosita y Joselin (1980) son dos hermanos Inga al cuidado de Doña Lola, la dueña de la cantina El Puente, quien los explota laboralmente. Cansados de la discriminación en su contexto y de los abusos de doña Lola y de los mineros que van a terminar sus largas jornadas laborales, deciden fugarse y buscar el dinero que necesitan para reencontrarse con su madre.

EN | In the midst of the lush and coveted Sumapaz páramo, F, a lone explorer and guardian of the mountains condemned by his destiny, immerses himself in the possibilities offered by his senses. Facing the imminent return of violence, and overcoming his human limitations, he has been preparing his escape, but before pursuing a new dimension, he will have to face a painful farewell.

ES | En medio del exuberante y codiciado Páramo de Sumapaz, F, un solitario explorador y guardián de las montañas condenado por su destino, se sumerge en las posibilidades que le ofrecen sus sentidos. Frente al inminente regreso de la violencia, y superando sus limitaciones humanas, ha estado preparando su escapatoria, pero antes de perseguir una nueva dimensión, tendrá que enfrentar una dolorosa despedida.

EN | Mother Earth's Inner Organs is a journey from Amsterdam to Wayú territory in the North of Colombia following the smoke, the rotten smell of burning Mma – meaning Mother Earth in Wayuunaiki. Bravo-Pérez weaves a narrative that goes from the surface of Mma to its depths. From the experience of the Wayú people and the filmmaker’s reflection on extractivist practices to plastic experimentations that create a lucid dream, an eye opener to how extractivism of coal affects life.

ES | Los órganos internos de la Madre Tierra es un viaje desde Ámsterdam hasta el territorio Wayú, en el norte de Colombia, siguiendo el humo, el olor a podrido de la quema de Mma -que significa Madre Tierra en wayuunaiki. Bravo-Pérez teje una narración que va desde la superficie de Mma hasta sus profundidades. Desde la experiencia del pueblo Wayú y la reflexión del cineasta sobre las prácticas extractivistas hasta las experimentaciones plásticas que crean un sueño lúcido, una revelación de cómo el extractivismo del carbón afecta a la vida.

EN | Aalsmeer in the Netherlands is the home to the largest flower auction market in the world. This film by Marta Rodríguez and Jorge Silva, pioneers of documentary making in Colombia, is a strong criticism of the conditions in which the global market of flowers happens at the extent of the life and health of thousands of Colombian women. Made in 1989, it shows how historical this issue is and how workers at the flowers' greenhouses in Bogota Sabana fight for their rights to dignified work.

ES | Aalsmeer, en Holanda, es la sede del mayor mercado de subastas de flores del mundo. Esta película de Marta Rodríguez y Jorge Silva, pioneros del documental en Colombia, es una fuerte crítica a las condiciones en que se desarrolla ese mercado mundial de flores a costa de la vida y la salud de miles de mujeres colombianas. Realizado en 1989, muestra lo histórico de este asunto y cómo las trabajadoras de los invernaderos de flores de la sabana de Bogotá luchan por sus derechos a un trabajo digno.

EN | After a failed casting, Sofia sells her lamps to go to work in a strawberry farm.

In Colombia, the city and the countryside merge. We have experienced one of the largest movements of peasants to the cities, the product of more than 50 years of internal war. Those millions of people have transformed the urban and its inhabitants. That is the case of Medellín, which hosts large communities of displaced people in its mountains. These films, made by filmmakers from that city, are an invitation to deep into the merging of urban and rural territory.

EN | From the director of LOS NADIE (shown at Cinema Colombiano 2017). Jorge lives on a coffee plantation in the middle of a forest-covered valley. He is the only member of his generation who has decided to stay in the countryside. For some months now nobody has wanted to pick the beans and his harvest has been hit by a severe plague. The local festivities are approaching and with them the reunion with his first love and his childhood friends, who come home from the city. After a weekend of celebration and having confronted the ghosts of his past, Jorge will realise that only fire can make ash out of a plague that not only inhabits the coffee plantations, but also the streets of the town and the mind of its visitors.

ES | Del mismo director de LOS NADIE (Cinema Colombiano 2017). Jorge es un joven campesino que vive en lo alto de una montaña. Todos los de su generación emigraron a la ciudad, pero él permanece en su pueblo a cargo de la finca cafetera que heredó de su padre; allí cuida de su abuelo y tiene amoríos con su prima Rosa. Las festividades del pueblo se acercan y él espera con ansias rencontrarse con Andrea, su exnovia, a quien no ha podido olvidar a pesar del tiempo y la distancia. El deseo de volver a verla se convierte en una obsesión, al tiempo que una plaga silenciosamente invade los cafetales. Llegan las fiestas y, en medio de la música estridente y las alucinaciones, Jorge comprenderá que todo lo que lo unía con su pasado ha desaparecido y que permanecer en su tierra es un acto de amor y resistencia.

EN | The London Gaita Social Club is an urban collective that plays Colombian Cumbia in its most traditional form, using drums, gaita flutes, maracas and voice. LGSC fuses vibrant rhythms and soulful melodies that celebrate this cultural heritage.With the aim of preserving this tradition and legacy London Gaita Social Club will offer their music as acknowledgement to all the maestros that have kept this amazing tradition alive.

EN Niñe is a Kamëntšá girl, who receives something special from her grandfather. This gift is connected to the spiritual beings of the 'jajañ' sacred space of the Kamëntšá crops.

EN | Sacred music as the territory of the Alto Putumayo or Tabanok, is the birthplace of the Camëntšá Indigenous People.

EN | "My brother was killed on 6 December by the Colombian army. I was told about it only three days later, when he was already buried. Since then, I have also lost my mother who has been silent since then. Overcome by the dismay that the state, which was supposed to protect us, was precisely the one that took her son away from her. Today I return to the place I love and hate, to make a journey from my heart to hers. To find and meet again my mother.
